Fighting Thinspo is dedicated to my youngest daughter who is 18 and has had a 3 year battle with Anorexia. Fortunately she is now doing much better but it has been a very difficult road. My daughters ED developed in part in response to exposure to thinspo and extreme weight loss blogs at a time in her life when she was very vulnerable. A few snoopy trips into the world of Tumblr revealed the shocking world of thinspo, pro ana, pro mia and extreme weight loss and left me feeling I should do something on line to try encourage and empower others to seek recovery. What you will find on Fighting Thinspo is information about ED’s , links to resources such as help lines and ED Information Websites and links to some excellent recovery blogs. There are also lots of inspirational quotes and messages and respect for all body types. I also welcome your submissions so PLEASE if you have something to say about EDs, perhaps a recovery story, or any issue that you feel passionate about Fighting Thinspo would love to hear it. I also want to make it clear I have no formal qualifications in this field and the information provided here is general and common sense in nature and freely available from other reputable sites. So Welcome, please let this blog be a island of positivity in the vast ocean of thinspo, extreme weight loss and self harm blogs. Fighting Thinspo is a ‘no judgement” sanctuary, and if you are any of those aforementioned blogs you are most WELCOME , I especially want you here. While they are often portrayed as disorders that only affect females, one in ten people diagnosed with an eating disorder are male. However, we also know that the under-diagnosis and the cultural stigma boys and men face means that the actual proportion of males with eating disorders could be much higher. For instance, we know that as many men experience binge eating disorder as women in their lifetime. Recent studies are indicating that the real figure could be that up to 25% of people with eating disorders are male.

Eating disorders can develop at any age but males and females are most at risk for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa in their late teens/early twenties, while binge eating disorder is more prevalent in a person in their mid-twenties.

Raising money for Cystic Fibrosis NSW

Raising money for Cystic Fibrosis NSW:
My beautiful niece Elizabeth has Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common, genetically acquired, life-shortening chronic illness affecting young Australians today. It primarily affects the lungs and the digestive system, however, it also affects a number of other organs and systems. Complications increase with age, requiring ever increasing levels of (self) care and support. On average one in 25 people carry the CF gene (most of whom are unaware they are carriers).
In an interview in The Daily Telegraph on Wednesday, Morgan said that the adulation the fashion industry heaps on extremely thin women was “…akin to giving young kids (the drug) ice. Some of them are going to end up addicts.”

In the words of every teenage girl at the mall: Way harsh. But also… true.

Given the look of some of today’s most popular high fashion models – and the fact that 90% of Australian girls aged 12-17 have been on some kind of diet – it appears that sadly, she may have a point.

When models are fainting, tissues are being eaten and women have waists the size of seven-year-old girls, it’s obvious that things in high fashion have spiralled out of control.

Obvious to everyone it would seem, except the people working in high fashion.

The upcoming Diagnostics and Statistics Manual (DSMV) was reviewed at the conference, and the new definitions of eating disorders were outlined. Some important changes are being made in the diagnosis of eating disorders that will affect how eating disorders are diagnosed and treated. For example, Binge Eating Disorder is now categorized as an eating disorder, in and of itself, rather than the former murky definition of it being listed under Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS), which was somewhat of catchall for everything besides the pure and uncompromised old DSM-IV definitions of anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder.

Another key change coming in the new DSMV definitions is that amenorrhea (lack of a menstrual cycle) is no longer part of the diagnosis of anorexia. This is helpful because there are cases where girls or women do menstruate and yet also have the disease of anorexia nervosa, and the requirement of amenorrhea to diagnose anorexia in the past may have caused some doctors to not accurately recognize anorexia because the girl or woman was still having a period.
